The Mount Gambier Courthouse Museum traces its roots back to 1865 when it once served as the district court. Now, it is a major attraction in Mount Gambier.

A century after it was first constructed, the building underwent renovations but retained its architectural style reminiscent of trends in the late 19th century.

The courthouse stands majestically, almost imposing itself on the quaint town. Built in a symmetrical manner, it is easy for visitors to see that the attention to detail in this building. The double height section is located at the mid-section of the building and is surrounded by one-storey structures. Inside the building, the courtroom is centrally located and is adjacent to a cell and four rooms which served as offices.

What stands out about this old Court House is that while every room is accessible from the courtroom, the rooms cannot be accessed independently. To-date antique furniture is still present at the Mount Gambier Courthouse Museum, certainly an attraction for antique-lovers who visit the courthouse.

Visitors are not short of things to do while at the courthouse. There are a number of displays at the facility which gives visitors an in-depth insight into what life was like at the courthouse. The banners, coupled with interpretive services, also tell tales of people who spent time at the courthouse. Quite a number of visitors get regaled by stories of criminals whose judgment was passed at the very location they have taken time to tour. One of the most interesting activities at the courthouse is the mock court case which makes for a lively and enriching experience.
