Under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972, it provides a protected area for the many species of nesting birds that live here.

These include migratory birds from Japan and China, as well as the black swan. In fact, ‘kungari’ is an aboriginal word that means ‘black swan’.

The Kungari Conservation Park is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area. There are no tourist amenities or facilities in the park, so those who are interested in visiting may check out staying in Baxter Hill or Reedy Creek.
